Special Needs Girl
Description:
We prefer emails as our method of corresponding. We get many phone calls each day (about animals that need help and families who want to adopt). We simply cannot keep up with our calls. It is much easier for us to respond to emails when we have free time (often these are hours where most people are asleep). If you are interested in adopting one of our animals, please fill out an application. We promise to get back to you. Thank you so much for understanding.

November 2009.  Our Special Needs Girl

Sophie was picked up by animal control, but no one claimed her so we took her in.  She was skin and bones and had hardly any hair.  The vet believes she was suffering from malnutrition and flea allergies.  We have no idea the situation she came from, but it couldn't have been good.

She is free of fleas and her skin is healing with the medications she had and some healthy food.  Her hair is starting to grow back.  We have taken her outside when the weather is good, just so she can run and get some fresh air.  She is still timid most of the time, and takes a while to warm up to people.  She does play with the other Chihuahua in the house some.  The vet thinks she is around 3 years, but she will need some dental work, which we may have done when she is spayed.  At the time we took her in she weighed 2.15 lbs, we took her in again after a month and she weighed 3.11 lbs.

She does have a luxating patella in her right back knee.  The vet explained that it is a grade 5 which is the worst it can be.  He said some times surgery won't help if the bone structure from birth is the cause.  We will have an x-ray taken to determine if surgery will help.

UPDATE:  Aug. 2010.  Sophie has been spayed, had a dental (a few teeth pulled, one was a baby tooth) and she now weighs 4 pounds.  The vet did the x-ray on her knee and said it is definitely a grade 5 so that means she is not in pain.  He also said we may not want to do the surgery because it could end up causing her pain.  And of course with any surgery on a dog this small, there are risks.  So she will  just be a special needs dog that has a "limp".

UPDATE:  Jan. 2014.  Sophie is a wonderful little dog.  She does bark to communicate with people, so just talking to her or petting her shows her she is loved and she stops barking.  Both of her back legs have the luxating patellas, but she is not in pain.  She had another dental and a few more teeth pulled but still is the perky little girl we love.  She now weighs 4.4 pounds and has lots of long hair.  She is still looking for her special home where she can be pampered because of her special needs.  If you think you can give her lots of love and special care, please fill out our adoption application on our website:  www.PAWFirst.com

We have set her adoption fee at $75.
